The Secret Getaway From Anxiety

The Secret Getaway From Anxiety

We all need a place to escape to. A secret getaway that you claim as your own. A place which forbids sadness or inner turmoil and banishes the monsters caged inside your head.

Mine is hidden inside a woodland called Leafland, a beautiful cove-like scene hidden by aging trees that overlook a flowing waterfall. I sit here on a wooden deck amongst the rocks, breathing in the tranquil atmosphere undisturbed, the greenery sheltering me from the rest of the world. My only company are the small bugs that crawl across the overlapping roots of the trees, gnarled and uneven. A vibrant canopy of green leaves hang above me, the sun shining through the gaps. The harshness of the sun is muted, the rays are softer as they warm the scent of the Earth lingering in the fresh spring air. It helps me reflect on my problems and to think as clear as the water in front of me.

Exposure to nature has been shown repeatedly to reduce stress and boost well-being. That’s why I ride my bike here too. Exercise is like fertaliser for the brain, and as cycling is the only type I can tolerate, I make the most of it when i can.

So what about you? Where’s your go to getaway? Share yours with us in the comment box below.

Hi Meg – love your beautiful site! : ) Your picture is so gorgeous and sounds extremely peaceful! I cannot say I have a place like that – at least a physical place, but I need one. I do have one in my mind though – is that weird? I have an anxiety/stress app I listen to that is SO relaxing, and they say to do exactly what you are saying. I get super relaxed doing what the person says, then I imagine this place with all of things and also none of the things it is supposed to have. Incredibly relaxing and mind clearing. Wish it was a real place like yours though. : ) So pretty!!!

A getaway is perfect for relieving anxiety. We run 4 day residential retreats in Somerset which include some therapeutic work on anxiety, mindfulness, baking, walking, yoga. They’re a tonic for the anxious soul. http://www.anxietydetox.co.uk

I don’t really have a place but can understand why people would find it beneficial. I guess it gives people time to think.
